We didn't have specific plans for the day so we could wander on the island.
I went to town about 8:30 to check out some shops. Things close early and I wouldn't have time the next day. I walked around poking into a few stores in a short time. Mainly I was looking for locally made things and those two shops didn't open until 10. Not much to do else to do but go back to condo. We packed up lunch stuff for a drive from one end to the other.
We started off but quickly I realized forgot the camera! J turned up into the heights. The road reminded me of San Francisico
As we drove by each of us noticed there was a goat in someone's driveway. Or what it was a. deer? J backed up and yes it was a fawn! After I got the camera we came back to take a photo.
We headed east first. It was such a nice drive, so few cars, and great views. Here's Lanai (I think) with a fish pond. There are 60 fish ponds (most remnants) on Molokai. The Franco map shows where they are.
I like looking at the various types of houses. Little shacks, small homes well kept and some mansions. This one is for sale for $1.2 Million
We stopped at Murphy's beach (? Not signs around here!). The shallow water was warm like bathwater.
The landscape got more dramatic. Lava rocks, one lane roads and going around curvy turns very slowly with limited visibility. This is much harder than the Road to Hana on Maui if you're scared at that.
I think this is Maui
Then up the mountain you go. Even the cows are friendly - one of her friends let out a big Moooooo as we drove by.
More jungle-y
Halawa Beach Park. We couldn't do much there. The guys waded across to the sandbar but I'm too short to do that without getting up past my waist.
A few more pictures from our way back to Kaunakakai. We stopped somewhere for lunch with an ocean view
That drive was a long haul so we took a break back at the condo. That gave me a chance to check out those shops! There are some lovely hand made items at Molokai Art from the Heart and Kalele Bookstore. I bought a few things and had a nice chat in both shops.
Off to the west we went. Not so many pictures but some country and dry area
This seemed like a longer drive than the map said. We drove through Maunaloa. Lots of homes that look like old company housing.
As we got to the west side beaches I was disappointed you can barely see the beaches. It looks like there are some very nice homes behind the gates. We stopped at Dixie Maru Beach which is lovely and swimable. That's Oahu in the background.
We missed going to Papohaku but we wanted to get back for Aloha Friday at the Hotel Molokai. R stayed at the condo. What a busy place! We got there at 4:30 and barely got a seat.
We wanted to see Lono since J's ukulele teacher knows him. We bought two CDs and got a pic with him. Very friendly crowd, and some hula too.
There were some vendors set up outside of the bar. I picked up a couple of handmade things. The guy from Molokai Music Maker had a table too.
We got back to condo and picked up kid for dinner at Molokai Pizza. They have more than just pizza. R and I and I had pizza , J had mahi mahi special. We were too tired and full to go for hot bread.
Watch out mules; R and I coming next!
Kim
Nice to see the real Molokai. Hopefully we'll get there some day.
ReplyDeleteMahalo! Very nice job sharing you adventure and photos! I'll be heading over soon myself to update my Driving & Discovering Maui and Molokai guidebook.

Enjoying your blog, especially Molokai. We traveled there 3 years ago and spent a week. I remember that scary road on the East side! Once was enough for me, very glad we weren't staying at the far end there. We stayed in one of the gated properties just above Dixie Maru beach on the west side.
