Maui and Molokai Day 14: I'm in love with Kapalua Bay

This was our last full day in Hawaii...

I had never been to Kapalua Bay.  My guys agreed to go there and our friends come along too.  Their  boys skipped the beach so they could sleep in after their long day on the Road to Hana.

It started raining as we left a but before 9am.  Good!  It chased people away and we got a great parking spot just as the sun came through!

We set up camp in the shade.   J went into the water first towards the left and wasn't impressed. R and I went out to the right side. That's where the good stuff is!   I saw lots of types of fishies, saw some eels, only one yellow tang but a bunch of teardrop butterfly fish!  Lots of trumpet fish too.  I snorkeled  twice, and ran out of camera battery  I missed getting photos of a big puffer, two eels, blue stripe butterfly fish.

Kapalua's got it all: easy parking (if you go early), bathrooms and showers, just the right size and so much to see underwater.  Will someone please buy me a condo on this beach?  Pretty please?  I'll try to be good!

I could have stayed all day but I needed to start packing.  It was scary because I had done my fair share of shopping.  I maxed out our three carry-ons (without using the extra space zipper) and used a small duffle bag and a beach bag.  Plus we each had a backpack.  I was hoping Alaska Air would offer free gate checks (they did).

I sneaked away for another little bit of shopping.  Paia Mercantile in Lahaina gateway was just what I needed for a few more goodies. I didn't make it to shop in Paia this time.  It seems like a lot of the little shops are going away, guessing because of high rents.

The rain came back and continued into the evening. It actually got a bit chilly!

We had dinner at the Maui Brewing Company.  R loves their root beer!  J and I got local specials beers: Mana Wheat with pineapple for me and, lemongrass something or other for J.  The two guys got fish sandwiches and I got a small Kalua pork slider with a salad. The food was nothing special  but that's all we wanted.

J and I went to Slack Key Show at Napili Kai.  It was a release party for Da Ukulele Boyz.  We saw them with George Kahumoku and others at home several months ago.  If you want to see if any hawaiian music in your town check mele.com for concerts, even in countries besides the US.

It was a happy event.  Da Boyz are cousins and lots of their Ohara came.  Their common tutu was in the audience too.  There was lots of laughter and great music.

It's very dark up there at night.  We parked on the opposite side of the road and were escorted across with a guy in a reflected vest and flashlight.  That was nice of the Napili Kai to ensure everyone gets into their car safely.  There is a curve just before the complex and fast drivers.

Heading home next day...

Kim
