Woke up in the middle of the night. Someone turned off the trade winds and it was not so cool anymore. Hated to do it but I had to turn on the AC.
Next time I woke up it was still too early but I got up anyway. At least I could see the moon over the water. It looked better than these photos on the iPad.
I sat on the lanai and enjoyed the view as the sky lightened until I realized some little bugs were landing on me. No itchies so I guess it wasn't skeeters.
The guys were waking up too, World Cup on tv. Nice breakfast of pineapple, mango and cinnamon bread.
My next priority was hitting a snorkeling beach before the south swell got much bigger. On the way we had to get fins for the guys at Boss Frog. I found a pair on the condo that work for me ok.
We decided to go to Changs/Makena Surf condos. It was a fave from last time and still remains one. Parked on the street. Easy walk to beach and set up camp. We brought a couple of those famous Tommy Bahana chairs from the condo. J walked north on beach a while R got wet. I just soaked in the beauty.
The water was a bit messy which churned up the sand so not it wasn't so good for snorkeling...until you went south around the corner. Plenty of coral but the waves kept many fish in hiding. I saw a couple of my humu friends chasing each other, a few schools of baby fish of some type and a few other species.
And then there were turtles! I swam along side them from a several feet away and smiled through my snorkel.
J took over the camera and went out further and got some nice pics at a cleaning station.
This one almost ran into J
R didn't like the new cressi dry snorkel along with the roughish water so he had to find something else to do. He made a sand trap under J's chair so that it would sink when he sat down. Then he climbed on the lava rocks and watched as J swam so he could when J would come in. The trap worked perfectly! Sorry, no photo of that but here's one of a Hawaiian sailing canoe. I think you can take a ride at one of the hotels.
It's always fun to watch people especially the ones walking in fins on the beach. I'm surprised they make it into the water without falling. There was one epic fail that was pretty funny. Then there was the (I'm guessing ) Japanese newly weds in matching shorts. In bright colors. He waddled into the water while she must have taken a hundred selfies. Really!
We left the beach about 11:30 but stopped at Ululani's for shave ice before the condo. We passed on the ice cream this time because that would be too much for a lunch appetizer (I know that's stretching it but I really wanted shave ice!)
R was quite happy with POG (layered Passion-orange and guava) flavor. I got No Ka 'Oi (mango, Lilikoi, coconut) which is good but Not again. The mango overwhelmed the other flavors. I'm already thinking of what to get next time!
After lunch we just hung around the condo napping, reading ( started "This is Paradise" by Kristiana Kahakauwila), World Cup, ice hockey, walking in the beach.
For dinner J wanted to go to Jennifer's Saigon Cafe in Wailuku. He ate there when he came on his solo trip in December. R and I were skeptical but we agreed since it's almost Fathers Day. It was interesting. Read the yelp reviews before you go to get a feel of what it is like.
It was full of locals, many of whom talked to the owners so they were probably regulars. The menu is long. But the service is shall I say ... random. Much if this is due to the owner who doesn't seem to multi task and thinks he is so funny. I asked for a Longboard beer and was told "we have shortboard". Then off he went to talk to someone coming in. After a while he came back for R and J's drinks and our food.
The food was good but came out here and there; one type of spring roll, and various things that were parts of our dinners; after a bit my dinner came (more about this later). 10 minutes later the garden rolls. 15 minutes then R's pho; a while on I was done and still J's hadn't shown up and had to ask for his mahi mahi curry type stuff. We weren't in any rush, just odd.
About my meal...I ordered a "Vietnamese burrito" (that's what it said in the menu) that comes with a plate of various things to make it on your own. For the meat I chose grilled pork meat balls which showed up as slices of pork loin. I was expecting something to use as a wrap but what came seemed like plastic. We all had a good laugh trying to figure it out but finally we had to get the waiter to explain that you dip it in hot water to make it soft.
Made a stop at Ono Gelato before heading "home". I'm glad I just got a small!
A hui hou, Kim
