This one will be shorter and with less photos than usual. It was time for a day out of the sun and sea (mostly).
I kind of dragged R with me on the Maui Fish Pond tour. J did it when he came in December and enjoyed it. I booked our ride the afternoon before. Usually the tour is only on M, W, F but it is availsble 7 days a week in June.
Uncle Kimokeo usually runs the tour but he is busy touring the world on the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Hokulea. Our guide was Vene and his teenage son Keo. Vene knows his stuff from paddling, Hawaiian Mythology, language and performs in the Ulalena show. So we were in good hands!
Vene sounded his conch and explained how Maui came to be and about the fishpond restoration. We we shown how to paddle and we helped to slide the outrigger canoe (wa'a) into the water. It was just the four of us so we had to work hard but it felt good. But R and I woke up the next feeling it in our shoulders!
Three Kihei Canoe Club boats were out filled with tourists but I preferred the intimacy of the one from the fishpond. We could feel the love and care of this excursion.
We went pretty far out into the moana (deep water). Vene and Keo invited us to join them in the water but I don't think I could have gotten back in the boat with any dignity! We saw a few turtles nearby coming up for air. Nice view of Haleakela.
Vene taught us some chants while paddling and stopped a few times to talk about his paddling trips with his son. They took the canoe around Lanai and to Kahooolawe. They camped there. The most fun was riding the surf in the canoe!
As we came back in there were a bunch of kids working on the fish pond rock wall.
R and I jumped in the condo pool to cool off. It felt sooo good! The grounds here are very well maintained and you've got to love the pretty pools. It's kind of hard to see but it is a mama and baby humpbacks.
After that I was wiped out! Just did some laundry, napped and shopped a bit in Kihei. R and I went to Ululani's. Oh so refreshing!
J went out for a walk and called for a ride home. He had walked down all the way to Kamaole Beach 2, along the ocean as much as possible. He was full of sand and I made him shower it off before he got In the car!
We decided it was R's turn to pick dinner and handed the blue book to him. After a lot of hemming and hawing he chose Three's Bar and Grill. The service and food was good. J had the Uku fish special, R had ribs and I had a burger and Mai Tai.
I crashed early but rallied the next day!
Kim
