Maui and Molokai Day 8: some of both; going where we've never gone before

Our last morning on Maui (part 1) and first day on Molokai - ever!

We woke up to smoke - looked like it was coming from West Maui.  It must have been taken care of quickly and the smoke cleared shortly.

R wanted to eat out for breakfast so we headed to Kihei Caffe.  The line was kind of long but the people working there are very efficient.  J and I got cinnamon rolls;  J chose the classic with icing and I had one caramel with Mac nuts. Yummy!  These are generous in size. I could barely eat it mine even  though I gave a big chunk to the kid.  R ordered Fernch Toast sweetbread with pineapple and coconut J hope him finish it.

We drove down some of the side streets off Kihei Road along the ocean. I could be happy living there. Then it was time to get serious about packing up.  We cleared out crust as the cleaner showed up.  Someone was coming in after us.

On the way to the airport we dropped off some of our luggage at Paradise Self Storage since we were just taking one to Molokai. We needed to get lunch but there was no consensus about where to go. We ended up at the  Queen Kaahumanu food court and everybody could get what they wanted.  Gassed up and turned in the car.  Alamo dropped us off at the commuter terminal.

We were flying with Mokulele in a small 9 seater Cessna. The commuter terminal has an old style feel.

We paid $15 for the one suitcase and carried on some other stuff. We each had to each weigh in with carry on.  I need to diet when I get home!

We had plenty of time to watch how it works.  You don't get a boarding pass; they just call for your flight and told which row you get. They put you near your travel companions. Left side is where the views are if you're going to Molokai.

Our flight was a bit late but not much.  As they say, slow down, you're on Molokai!  We walked onto the Tarmac and got in our seats. It seemed less crowded than a jet since there are just one seat one each side of the aisle.  Everyone gets an aisle and window seat!

We zoomed down runway and off we went. Bye Maui!

This is what the Kahekili Road looks like from above,

On to Molokai

Halawa Valley

North Shore

Kaulapapa

You can see both coasts north to south

It was an easy and smooth ride, with a little bumpy landing.  We picked up our bag on the Tarmac and then got our car from Alamo. It is a totally black dodge charger. Not our style.  I don't expect to see any Teslas on this island! (But I did see a Leaf later)

We got lost leaving the airport!  Really!  How pathetic! We ended up getting out going out a back road.  We got turned around and went west instead of east to Kaunakakai. There were no signs anywhere for a while. Finally we saw an 460 West sign so time to turn around.  But there was nowhere to safely turn around!  Finally we did and got to the condo. No hurry, just something to laugh at.

Our home away for home is Molokai Shores 308 vrbo 486507.  1 br with loft (with King bed). Nice view of the ocean. This place is great.  Everything works well, excellent fans, everything you would need.  Neat, clean.  The decor is totally Hawaii!

We got settled in and then went to dinner at Paddlers because there was supposed to be local music.  Turned into open mic but no one showed up for that either.  It was Italian night so we got to listen to 40's so got songs like That's Amore.

It looked like just tourists were eating there but it was a bit early.  The bar part was full of local men.  We ordered some of the Italian specials from a very friendly waitress.  The food was decent. As we left we saw a rainbow.

We made a stop at Friendlys Market for a few items. And went back to the condo.  The hot bread run will have to wait for another night...

Moreon Molokai next time... Kim
